Google will help you get better search results- For FREE!

I’ve just been hanging out at the Google Webmasters Tools site. It’s amazing how much info and help there is, and it’s free!

In particular, I downloaded and read the Search Engine Optimization Starter Guide, it’s incredibly simple and straight-forward, you’ll have to register, but it’s FREE!

I’m pretty excited to put some of the things I’m learning into practice. But here are some quick highlights:

1) All your Pages need <title> and TAG, which is unique to each page.

2) Use words in your URL’s, be descriptive, simple- use lowercase letters.

3) Site navigation, focus on simplicity and ease of use. Again, Google has another tool, Sitemap Generator Script. Yes, it’s free.

I’m using WordPress so a lot of these things are very simple to do. And that’s another exciting subject.

I’ll be adding more later, stay tuned…

Washing Windshields for Free and Profit

The other day at a self-serve gas station near my office there were several guys washing the windows of the cars that came in for gas. They were doing it for free. Nice gesture, right? Yep! But even more than that they were offering windshield repair and replacement. The repair was done ‘on-the-spot’, pretty cool. Up here in Minnesota a chip can easily become a crack, so fixing that kind of thing makes a lot of sense. They also made appointments for on-site or in their shop windshield replacement.

What an awesome way to get more business. They didn’t wait for customers to come to them. And by doing something nice, they got to get up close and personal and physically examine the windshields. The cynical might say they were only being nice to get something, not true. Many people didn’t need anything, but still got to drive away with clean windows and a “have a nice day!” The people that did need some kind of window repair were offered a super convenient opportunity to get it fixed. Everyone came out ahead, even the gas station owner was able to at no cost to himself, give extra value to his customers.

So what could you do with your business to go to where your potential customers are?

How about a jewelry store in a mall? Set up a table, just outside your entrance, clean passersby jewelry for free. You could examine it to see if it needed repairs, or suggest an upgrade.

Back at the gas station, if you owned a tire store nearby, you could go and check the air in peoples tires. You’d have the opportunity to inspect the tires and offer services. They actually used to do that all the time at all gas stations before there was just self-service! Funny how times change, gas stations used to help you take care of your car, now they just sell you gas, candy and soda. And one really big thing is you would really be serving a lot of people, because most people drive on under-inflated tires, you might even save a life!

Where are your potential customers? How could you reach them in a unique, memorable way? Think about it.

Blogging from a Cruise Ship

Part of My Dream

Right now I am sitting on the balcony of the Carnival Legend cruise ship. We just spent the day at Roataan, Honduras at the beach. My wife caught some rays and I went snorkeling, which is an incredibly awesome experience (more in future blogs).

I’m using my iPad to write this out. And I’m drinking a cup of Starbucks coffee, I brought along my packets of Via!

Here’s the Question…

How can I do this more? What’s it going to take? What changes do I have to make? I’m serious. I’m 52, not old, but I can see it. I’m busy, but what’s that getting me?

I think it’s really important for all of us to get ahold of our dreams again. What about you?

Do we just work until we die? I don’t think so! When was the last time you really enjoyed yourself? Think about it.

We need to enjoy the everyday things; Hanging out with our kids or grandkids, reading a book on a quiet Saturday morning, every day we get is a gift. But we also need to put some of the big things out there, like this cruise I’m on, or a fishing trip with your friends, how about a weekend away with your wife? (there are many benefits to that last one!)

What changes could you make to start living out part of your dreams? Can you, or rather will you, reprioritize?

I know I am. There’s just too much of life to let it all just go by. One of the things I’m doing is starting this blog, Marketing4B.com. It’s the marriage of 2 of my passions, small business marketing and the Internet. And some day I hope I can do all my work from some place like a Starbucks or like the deck chair I’m sitting in right now. It’s part of my dream!

Take a 20 Minute Walk

Just this week I went to the doctor for my almost annual physical. I’ve got a great guy’s doctor. And every time we meet part of his instructions for me are to exercise. Now, I’m not crazy out of shape, but I could stand to lose 15 lbs or so. Like almost everyone, I’m so busy I don’t know where I would fit it in.

This particular visit we talked about exercise from a different angle, we talked about heart disease and vascular health. He told me that you cannot reverse damage to the heart and that you cannot reduce the build of plaque in your arteries, you can only slow down the future damage. He also said I needed to be concerned about what could happen if I came under heavy stress. Was he taking stuff like heart attack? Ok, I’m just 52, but you know what, I’m there. Like it or not, I’m not in my 30′s or even 40′s anymore, I’ve got to start thinking about stuff like this.

So, am I at crisis? No, but changes are needed. Here’s what he said, “Take a 20 minute walk everyday.” That’s it. He told me that the residual benefits from moderate exercise last 24-36 hours. He said it’s better to do something everyday, than go to the gym 3 times a week. Yay, because I can’t fit the gym in one day a week! But, I can take a 20 minute walk, I can do it in my street shoes at lunch, I can do it when I’ve got time between tasks and my dog, Charlie, would be really happy to accompany me. So what does this have to do with marketing?

Marketing is like Exercise

Most businesses are out of shape, and most can’t handle heavy stress and at the very least, they could definitely use a check up. So, let’s start with a check up. When was the last time you sat down and thought and wrote about your business and your plans? That’s the self exam part, looking in the mirror and saying, I need to get rid of that gut. We are our own best doctor, but we have to be honest with ourselves. We can and should consult professionals that can help us, yes a marketing doctor. Here at Marketing4B you’ll find resources, many are free, lots low cost and simple, most you can access online.

Prevent a Heart Attack

Yes, as business owners we do have to worry about heart disease, there are so many things that could cause a heart attack, like losing key customers or vital employees and the ever present financial challenges. Do you regularly explore new ideas for marketing and improving business? Do you have some good customers (you know, the ones where you make a good profit and they appreciate what you do!) that you could ask why they choose you to do business with? That will reveal your strengths. And it will help you determine what your best customers are, then go find more of those!

I regularly call some of my competitors to see how they are doing, to see what they are hearing in the areas I do business in. I try to share some of the things I’m learning too. It’s brought some opportunities where we’ve come together and both made money. The reality is, and you know this, it’s nice to have someone to talk with that understands your business. If you don’t think you’d want to talk with a competitor, find other business owners to network with. You can become workout partners, and help motivate each other, plus it can make your life a lot more fun.

And since you’re reading this from the internet, you know how much information is available. Websites, blogs, ebooks, white papers, webinars are all available as sources of new ideas and knowledge. How about taking a few minutes over the next 10 days searching for and finding and implementing just 1 new idea to help market your business? It’s kind of like taking the stairs instead of the elevator!

And one that I like is to read a book about a part of my business. I find it amazing that for less than 20 bucks I can have in my hands what someone has taken years to learn. And much of that came from them learning what doesn’t work, the hard way. I’m ok with not learning everything from personal experience which can sometimes really suck.

Here’s the Bottom Line

Promise yourself that you’re gonna start taking better care of your business. Take a little time each day to do something about your future. Remember the benefits, bigger profits, more free time, less stress, more fun and so on.

Most people think I can’t do it just right, so they do nothing. I’m asking you to just do something every day. A little consistent effort builds on itself and will reap big rewards.

You, yourself, are worth it! And yes taking a physical 20 minute walk would be a good idea too!

Fun in Mazatlan

So now I’m putting a picture up on my blog which is something I’ve never done.

Learning WordPress for Fun and Profit

As I have embarked on this new venture Marketing4B, one of my main goals has been to find, learn and then share good and easy ways for small business owners to market themselves. And I want it to be fun for them and for me.

In all my looking and exploring I’ve come across WordPress. It started as a blogging platform, but has now developed into a full website management tool. I’ve also discovered lots of resources and fellow WordPressers that teach and share ideas on how to effectively use WordPress.

Blogging is a great way to share ideas and knowledge. But, as I’ve come to find, it’s really a great tool to develop relationships with customers, potential customers and like-minded people, i.e. other small business owners.

And has been pointed out relationships are two way streets. Which means that the relationship is mutually beneficial. To that end I intend to provide links to good companies that I am affiliated with. You get the benefit of the product or service, I get some change in my piggybank.

So I hope you’ll enjoy watching the progress as Marketing4B becomes a great go to place for ideas for your small business.
